What division will/should my child play in?

USA Hockey Age divisions are applied. Players who intend to move up to the next level the following season are encouraged to play up. For example. Travel players who will be Pee Wees in the next season may play up as Bantams. In-house players may play up if they feel they are ready and their coach recommends it. In-house players who do not intend to move up should stay in their current age division.

Mite–8 and Under–Born in 2001 or later
Squirt–9 and 10 Yr. Olds–Born in 1999 and 2000
PeeWee–11 and 12 Yr. Olds–Born in 1998 and 1997
Bantam–13 and 14 Yr. Olds–Born in 1996 and 1995
Midget/HS–15 thru 18 Yr. Olds–Born in 1994, 93, 92, 91

What level of play will the Sugar Land Ice & Sports Center Fall League offer?

Players of all skill levels are invited to join the League. The Fall/Spring league is an “In-House” League, comprised of teams from Sugar Land Ice & Sports Center, the Willowbrook Aerodrome, Memorial City and Space City Ice Station (BAHHA).

Where will the teams practice and play?

The teams will practice at Sugar Land Ice & Sports Center and games will be played at the Sugar Land Ice & Sports Center, the Aerodrome Willowbrook, Memorial City and Space City Ice Station.  Teams can expect on average to have 25% of the games scheduled on Sundays. At most 3 to 4 games will be scheduled on Sunday mornings at Willowbrook.  The above number of Sunday games may be more or less depending upon the number of teams fielded at all facilities.  We expect 1-2 teams per level from each rink.

How long is the season?

The  Sugar Land Ice & Sports Center summer season officially begins the weekend of April 5th for Mites, Squirts, Pee Wees and Bantams and ends July 15, 2010.   The HS division will start the week of April 19th  and will also end July 15th.  The players who are currently playing Varsity hockey go longer than the travel and in-house leagues and we wanted to give those players a little extra time between seasons.  The difference in start dates is the reason for the lower price for the HS division.

What is the anticipated practice schedule?

Sugar Land Ice & Sports Center has ice Monday thru Thursday and practice may be on any of these nights.  We try to give the Mites and Squirts the earlier slots and the Bantams (and High School/Midgets) the later slots.  You should plan to be available on any of those nights.

How many players are placed on a team?

Generally, there are 15 players and two goalies placed on a team. Some teams may have fewer players depending upon the registration.  We rarely have more than 15 and 2 but on a rare occasion it is possible.  The League will strive to create equally talented teams through an evaluation process.   Players must have completed our classes or played on a previous sanctioned team in order to participate in our leagues. All practice schedules will be posted on the Sugar Land Ice & Sports Center website.

Will the Midget/High School division be based on the schools the players attend?

We will make an effort to have the teams based on the school the players attend but based on numbers we may have to combine two or three schools together.  Also, if it looks like there won’t be parity in terms of talent and experience we may make changes that we feel will provide parity but still work toward school affiliations.

Are there any skating requirements for players?

In order to participate in the league, players must have either completed Hockey 2, Mighty Mites or previously skated for a USA Hockey Ice Hockey registered team, or another sanctioned, organized ice hockey program in Canada or Europe.

Does my child have to be evaluated or drafted to be placed on a team?

Yes. Players will be evaluated the first time they are scheduled to be on the ice. The league will strive to create equally talented teams through an evaluation process. The coaches will notify you of the team and practice time for your player after all evaluations are completed.

What kind of hockey equipment does a player need?

According to the USA Hockey and to the Texas Amateur Hockey Association rules and guidelines, a player has to have the following equipment:

  • H.E.C.C. approved helmet with full-face shielda
  • Protective cup/athletic supporter
  • Non-clear mouthpiece
  • Elbow pads
  • Hockey gloves
  • Hockey pants
  • Shoulder pads
  • Shin guards
  • Skates
  • Hockey sticks
  • Neck Guards (for Mites and Squirts)
  • Practice jersey and socks
  • Optional: suspenders or garter belt

Players in every division are required to wear the full equipment as listed above to participate in the practices and games. Refusal to conform and enforce these guidelines may subject a player, team or coach to suspension
